User-centered Design

User-centered design methods may be applied through the process of product development, from generation of initial ideas till user starts to use the end product. Users’ participation to design process is essential. User-centered design provides a general framework that consists of some specific techniques together with basic usability methods, namely, usability testing, expert analysis and field studies. During design process techniques such as paper-prototyping, wizard of oz and pc-based models are frequently utilized to get user involved in to the process.

In order to shape design in accordance with users’ mental models, task analysis and participatory design techniques are used. User-centered design projects are conducted in collaboration with the firm, and may be applied in various stages of the development process.

The results of user-centered design projects are delivered as documents and design suggestions.

Usability Testing

Usability tests are among the most frequently used usability techniques. In tests a product or a system is tested in a controlled environment with certain scenarios of use. Evaluation is both based on conventional quantitative measures such as effectiveness, efficiency and error frequency; and qualitative aspects such as the characteristics of problems and user behavior.

Usability tests may be completed within 6-12 weeks period, depending on level of complexity of the product being studied.

At the end of the project, a document that consists of design suggestions for the problems observed and observational analyses is delivered.

Expert Analysis

During expert analysis the product is investigated with regards to a set of heuristics in order to uncover some potential problem areas that will probably give way to usability problems. Depending on the characteristics of the product criteria of evaluation are determined. The criteria may be compiled from widely-accepted design guidelines and standards. Like other techniques, the ultimate aim is to generate alternative design solutions. Expert analysis is a technique often consulted as a preliminary stage in comprehensive projects or when the project has a tight budget.

Expert analysis may be completed within 4-6 weeks period, depending on level of complexity of the product being studied.

At the end of the project, a document that consists of design suggestions and analyses is delivered.

Contextual Research – Field Studies

In field studies the aim is to study the product or system within a social network of relation in its environment of use. The fact that user behavior is observed in situ, within the context of use makes sure that the outcomes are lively and valid. Especially in projects where adaptation process, technology acceptance or cultural factors are to be explored, such methods yield quite successful results. The method consists of questionnaires, observation and interviewing techniques. The research may be oriented towards a finished product or the context itself before the conceptual design stage.

Field studies take at least 6 weeks to complete.
The results are delivered with a document.

Anthropometrics and ergonomics

No design may be satisfactory without considering basic requirements. Appropriateness of a system regarding other aspects of ergonomics is an indispensible part of usability and enhanced user experience. In ergonomics research both physical and cognitive aspects of a product are holistically analyzed. Together with our pool of consultants we have the expertise in the following areas:

Anthropometrics;
Workspace and envelopment design;
Control-display ergonomics;
Biomechanics...
